Victim of Islamic genital mutilation victimized again by Brandeis University

Disgusting. It’s as classic a case of war on women as one could find.

Ayaan Ali Hirsi was disfigured as a young girl in Somalia under Islam. She suffered a clitorectomy at the hands of her grandmother. Her family fled to the Netherlands where she grew to appreciate Western values such as freedom and not being forced to marry someone you dislike and not having to endure beatings and clitorectomies. Since then she has become a champion for women’s and girls’ rights worldwide and an advocate against such Islamic traditions as honor killings, forced marriages, beatings and genital mutilation.

Brandeis University had planned to award Hirsi an honorary degree at this year’s commencement ceremonies. That is, until the Council on American Islamic Relations got involved.

WASHINGTON, April 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Brandeis University not to pay tribute to notorious anti-Muslim extremist Ayaan Hirsi Ali with an honorary degree at its commencement on May 18.

Brandeis capitulated to the religion of perpetual indignation and rescinded her honorary degree.

Following a discussion today between President Frederick Lawrence and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Ms. Hirsi Ali’s name has been withdrawn as an honorary degree recipient at this year’s commencement. She is a compelling public figure and advocate for women’s rights, and we respect and appreciate her work to protect and defend the rights of women and girls throughout the world. That said, we cannot overlook certain of her past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values. For all concerned, we regret that we were not aware of these statements earlier.

As someone said, Brandeis apparently is unable to use Google.

For sure, Hirsi has used inflammatory rhetoric. She has called Islam “a destructive, nihilistic cult of death.”

That’s not without some merit.

As one of its students observes, Brandeis is not without one notable trait- hypocrisy.

But Brandeis student Daniel Mael told Arutz Sheva that by overlooking her achievements in the field of human rights based on such statements exposes serious hypocrisy on the part of the university’s administration – noting previous occasions in which people with no less controversial views were honored by Brandeis.

“Hirsi Ali is a champion of human rights who should be lauded for her devotion to stopping honor killings, forced marriage and female genital mutilation.

Conflicting political views have not previously been a barrier to honorees:

“The decision is a blatant contradiction of past-president Jehuda Reinhartz’s defense of the same award being given to Tony Kushner. When the anti-Israel Kushner was given an honorary degree, Reinhartz said, ‘Mr. Kushner is not being honored because he is a Jew, and he is not being honored for his political opinions. Brandeis is honoring him for his extraordinary achievements as one of this generation’s foremost playwrights, whose work is recognized in the arts and also addresses Brandeis’s commitment to social justice.’”

Similarly, Mael points out, “Hirsi Ali was not being honored for her views on Islam. She was being honored for her commitment to women’s rights and real justice.”

Double standards?

What’s more, Mael points out, Brandeis University has hosted several controversial anti-Israel speakers, including Sam Bahour, an activist who opposes any peace negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and Israel and who believes that Israel does not have the right to exist.

In a 2011 column in the Guardian Bahour wrote, “Israel [is] a settler, colonial, apartheid movement clinging to a racialist, exclusivist ideology. [The Palestinians] were correct to [reject Israel] at the outset of this conflict [1948].”

Brandeis had no objection to Bill Ayers as a speaker and can take pride in having graduated three women who made the FBI Ten Most Wanted List; Angela Davis, Susan Saxe and Katherine Power.

The bottom line is clear- Brandeis succumbed to dhimmitude. Islamic intolerance is one more reason not to care for CAIR.

Or Brandeis.
